A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is one of my all-time favourite novels. I recently re-read it, and it blew me away for the second time. It tells the tale of two Afghan women and how their lives are affected by Soviet invasion, civil war and the rise of the Taliban.
I'm recommending it now in the wake of the Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan. The novel shows through a brilliant and heart-wrenching story the hardship that Afghan civilians, especially women, endured under the first rule of the Taliban.
This book has connected me forever to Afghanistan. Because of A Thousand Splendid Suns, I care what happens there. To me, Mariam and Laila are real people, and my heart aches to imagine what they and people like them are now going through 15 years after the story ends.
